Both highly respected solo artists and songwriters in their own right, Steve Grady and Josh Rennie Hynes formed The Ahern Brothers after an impromptu trip to the USA in late 2016.
After spending a few days in San Francisco, they packed the car and set off. For the next three weeks they travelled throughout Northern California and Oregon taking in national parks, small towns, cities and stories along the way, documenting the experience by writing an album’s worth of songs.
“Steve and I hadn’t written anything together before, but as soon as we got to San Francisco we pulled out our guitars, and the songs just came pouring out,” Rennie-Hynes said. “We’d wake up,
make a coffee and work on writing a song for that day. At the end of three weeks, we had a bunch of material that we were so proud of.”
Their album and performances have drawn immediate comparisons to Simon & Garfunkel and The Everly Brothers in terms of storytelling and harmonies. The singing and performances are world class, but freedom and playfulness are what make The Ahern Brothers incredibly refreshing. Organic, cohesive, pure and spacious, these two incredibly talented young songwriters have joined their skills to create the best songs they possibly can.
The Ahern Brothers have just toured Australia with Tex, Don & Charlie and have received great reviews for their performance.
“Opening duo The Ahern Brothers channelled Simon & Garfunkel with their tight harmonies and story-led songs. Their sound was familiar and warm, with the biggest surprise coming from the Australian twang of their accents as they chatted between tracks. A soothing sonic whiskey to open the evening, indeed.” The Music, 2017
