The only community band within the Moyne Shire, the Port Fairy Citizens Band established in 1870, has a rich history of providing musical entertainment and supporting community events and groups within the Shire of Moyne. The band prides itself on versatility and will play numerous musical styles, ranging form ceremonial music, hymns, Latin, disco, musicals/movie themes, pop music, folk tunes and in recent times jazz.
The Port Fairy Citizens Band would like to dedicate this years Folk Festival performance to Long-time band member, Ken Lemke. Ken passed away in May 2018 and his loss has been felt heavily by the PFCB but also by the Port Fairy Community in which he contributed his time so generously.
Ken’s association with the PFCB began in 1954 at the age of 14, playing E-flat Bass, before switching to Euphonium. Ken was a brilliant euphonium player, but his 64 year contribution to the band also included, life membership, longest serving PFCB bandmaster as well as representing the P.F.C.B at numerous Championships. He was a member of the Band’s first Victorian championship in 1975 and a very proud member of the Australian Band Championship in 1980 in Mt Gambier, just a few of the bands numerous successes in which Kens contribution was integral.
To us, Ken represented the heart and soul of the Port Fairy Citizens Band and members regarded him (though he would never claim the title) as our spiritual leader. Ken epitomised what the band represents and his wise counsel combined with superb musical knowledge & ability, ensures he will be remembered as an important & influential figure in the history of the P.F.C.B. Ken regarded the band as his second family and spoke fondly of the bands achievements and past players. Olga (Kens wife) had said on many occasions that Ken would still attend Thursday nights practice sessions, such was his passion, even if it wasn’t on.
Ken, thank you for your magnificent service to the Port Fairy Citizens Band and the Port Fairy Community. You leave behind a rich legacy in your love of music, the respect admiration and friendship of fellow musicians and the band you cherished so dearly.
