When, Where, Why

WHEN?

The festival is held in early March each year over the Labour Day long weekend on the beautiful south-west coast of Victoria in the historic sea-side village of Port Fairy

WHAT ...?
Australia's "world famous" independent music festival presents major international and national folk artists during a four day festival of folk, country, celtic, blues, jazz, bluegrass, traditions, contemporary, singers, songwriters, acoustic rock and world roots music.

There are also sessions, choirs, theme concerts, workshops, classes and theatre. The festival magically transforms the fishing village in a spirit of cultural celebration. This includes parades, fairs, markets, busking, children's events and street theatre in a Free Festival of the Streets along side five main concerts in the ticketed Arena.

Apart from wonderful concerts there are many special festival highlights and events. These include the Festival of The Streets, Festival Craft Fair, Markets and Food Festival, The Instrument Makers Exhibition, Buskers, Theatre, Sessions, Singalongs, Special Awards, Street Performances, The Poet's Breakfasts and much more.

The Festival Arena is the main venue along with many others including churches, halls, street stages, parks, markets, pubs and clubs. The Festival Arena contains five Main Stages, the Children's Folk Circus, The Wine Bar, Guinness Club, Lighthouse Cafe, Workshop Stages, The Pavilion, Food Festival , Market and Craft Stalls.

HOW LONG...?
The festival starts late Friday afternoon when a free Street Stage starts, followed by stages in The Arena opening after 5pm on Friday Some 20 venues run all weekend:
Friday 6.00pm until 1.00am
Saturday 10.00am until 1.00am (Gates open 9.00am and close at 1.30am)
Sunday 10.00am until 1.00am (Gates open 9.00am and close at 1.30am)
Monday 10.00am until 1.00pm (Gates open 9.00am and close at 2.30pm)


WHO...?
The festival presents major international and national folk artists in a festival of music, music, music - folk, country, blues, jazz, bluegrass, acoustic rock and world roots

...Stay a day, stay a week! Over four days we present a feast of exciting culture with great concerts, stories, markets, camping, dancing, singing, meeting old friends and making new ones ...

HOW...?
The Port Fairy Folk Festival is organised and presented by the Port Fairy Folk Festival Committee Incorporated. The festival is presented with the assistance and hospitality of residents, businesses, the shire, many local community clubs and organisations and especially a large team of volunteers, the Friends of the Festival.

WHY...?
The aims of the organisation are:

  • to present an excellent festival of significance in Australia and worldwide

  • to promote folk music, broadly defined as World Roots and Acoustic - music that is diverse, traditional, indigenous, multi-cultural, social, reflecting and enriching people's lives and culture

  • to provide support and benefits for the Port Fairy community
