Archie Roach
Archie Roach performs songs from his newly released album, Music Deli Presents Archie Roach—1988. At a time when much of Australia was celebrating the Bicentennial, a young Archie Roach was expressing in song what many who weren’t celebrating were feeling. For many indigenous people there was anger, despair, disadvantage, land rights battles and deaths in custody. The show provides an intimate portrait of one of the world's most significant storytellers and songwriters, with some songs that have never been released.

Chris Smither

USA
One of North America’s leading blues and folk artists, Chris Smither is renowned for his alluring baritone vocals, superb song writing and outstanding musicianship. Smither is a proud carrier of a true American tradition, regularly performing masterful arrangements of some of the classic African American blues tunes. His own songs display a wry, intellectual, deep look at it all, “on the outside looking in”, as one of his best new songs describes. His live performance is further enhanced by the same dry, darkish sense of humour that is prevalent in so many of his songs. This is Smither’s fifth visit to Australia and he brings with him a recently released eleventh studio album, Time Stands Still.
Time Stands Still is both pensive and visceral, an album whose songs alternately ponder life’s mysteries in some moments, and let them lie undisturbed in others, the most intimate and stripped-down record he’s made in a long time.

Colin Hay

AUSTRALIA/USA
Themes of redemption and renewal come naturally to Colin Hay. As frontman, principal songwriter, and lead vocalist of pop sensations Men at Work (‘Down Under’, ‘Overkill’, ‘Who Can It Be Now?’), the past ten years have found him quietly re-introducing himself to new generations of fans. The frequent use of his music on soundtracks—including the hit television show Scrubs and the sleeper-hit soundtrack to the film Garden State—has proven the timeless appeal of his songs. Combine that with tireless touring and an ongoing successful partnership with Nashville-based indie Compass Records, and Hay is poised to enter a new phase in his career.
Recorded in Nashville mid 2009, his new album American Sunshine highlights Colin's haunting, clear vocals and skillful guitar playing. He will perform songs from this album, as well as songs from his acclaimed album Are You Lookin’ At Me?, along with selections from other albums and fan favourites.

Ego Lemos

EAST TIMOR
Ego Lemos is a remarkable man, with a remarkable voice in more ways than one. Regarded as a significant East Timorese community member, Ego has lived through three tumultuous periods of his nation’s history. He has interpreted and modernised some of the most beautiful and heart-wrenching traditional melodies from his nation’s history, and produced a wreath of original songs in the Nation’s lingua-franca, Tetum. He sings about issues such as the centrality of water to life, praises the nation’s peasant farmers in their unceasing toil, and urges his people to remain positive and strive for unity.
Ego Lemos’ poignant, subliminally strong debut solo album O Hele Le gradually penetrates the psyche where his voice remains for some time after. He demonstrates a great intimacy and connection with songwriting and his album highlights the tremendous talent he has to offer Indigenous music in Australia, and indeed, the world.

Eilen Jewell

USA
Boise-born and Boston-based, Eilen Jewell has quickly distinguished herself as one of the rising stars of a new generation of roots musicians. Her first two albums, Boundary County and Letters from Sinners and Strangers were astonishingly assured efforts, which matched Jewell’s understated yet insightful songs with a rugged blend of Americana styles. “On those albums”, she reflects, “people told me they heard folk, country, western swing, rockabilly, and even jazz … but a part of my roots has been left out up until now”.
Eilen Jewell’s third album, Sea of Tears, fills in a vital, hitherto missing element of her musical persona. With Sea of Tears, Jewell and her long-time band wed her elegantly unflinching songwriting with a rustic, pre-Beatles swagger that encapsulates vintage R&B, Midwestern garage rock, Chicago blues, and early rock and rockabilly, while maintaining the haunting, folk inspired purity that first made her an artist to watch.

In addition to two Grammy nominations Kim's songs have appeared on television in Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Grey's Anatomy, and Alias, to name a few. Lulo Reinhardt

GERMANY
Lulo is the grand-nephew of legendary gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and nephew of Gypsy violin master Shnuckenack Reinhardt. He first learned to play the guitar with his father at the age of five, first performing professionally at age twelve.
Lulo has since toured Europe, gone to Spain in search of Flamenco roots and to South America to explore various kinds of Latin music. Constant travel and exploration of other musical forms has brought many influences from outside Europe to Lulo’s music. This is why he is considered the most unique voice in gypsy jazz/swing music today and with his seven-piece band also featuring violin, percussion, bass, keyboards and drums, Lulo adds flamenco, Cuban and Brazilian rhythms to traditional gypsy roots music.
Lulo's current DVD & CD is Lulo Reinhardt Live in Melbourne 2008, recorded on his previous Australian tour.

Máirtin O’Connor Band

IRELAND
Since 2001, Máirtin O’Connor, Cathal Hayden and Seamie O’Dowd have been building a formidable musical relationship. Their rapport with each other and the audience is immediate and the band have successfully toured Ireland, Britain, Europe, and Australia. Individually, they have built solid reputations as master musicians with astounding skill, diversity and virtuosity. Together, they produce a vibrant experience that redefines one’s concept of brilliance, verging on perfection.
Máirtín was one of the main musical forces behind the now legendary Riverdance phenomenon. As a solo artist, he has quite simply gone where no Irish accordion player has gone before.
Cathal Hayden needs no introduction to anyone familiar with traditional Irish music. He is one of Ireland’s top fiddlers and his solo banjo performances are quite simply show stopping.
On guitar and vocals, Seamie O’Dowd’s influences are deeply rooted in the traditional music of Sligo. He has played in many genres of acoustic and electric music.

Nanci Griffith

USA
Standing somewhere between folk and country music, Nanci Griffith has earned equal attention as a beautiful, self-styled, ‘folkabilly’ singer and an honest songwriter embraced for her talents by the country music scene since the early 1980s.
After numerous albums, singles and covers of Griffith’s songs finding success on the country music charts, a musical shift became clear in 1989 with the album Storms, which made it on to the pop charts and became her most successful release. However, in the 90s Nanci Griffith returned to her folk and country roots, particularly when newly signed with Elektra in 1993 with the LP Other Voices, Other Rooms, which features contributions from some of her influences such as Emmylou Harris, Chet Atkins and John Prine.
Griffith has since released other folk and country influenced albums, including a compilation of her best work from the MCA years. Her latest album, The Loving Kind, was recorded in 2009.

Narasirato Pan Pipers

SOLOMAN ISLANDS
Narasirato live traditional lives at the remote southern end of Malaita Island, in the Solomon Islands. They are farmers and fisherman, warriors, musicians, instrument makers and dancers. Narasirato performances are high energy, as they simultaneously dance whilst playing their unusual bamboo instruments; tapping tubes, thong-o-phones, huge blown bass, pan pipes, drums and percussion, all driven to new heights with soaring vocals and rich island harmonies. Narasirato performances are always uplifting and inspiring; their ability to communicate their ancient Are’are culture alongside their ‘new’ music is full of joy and integrity.
Their CD Cry Of The Ancestors has both their traditional Are’are cultural music and their ‘new’ music, including their song ‘My Culture Is My Life’, which was at number 1 on the ABC Asia Pacific Top ten for seven weeks.

TIBET
While his primary instrument is his extraordinary voice, Tenzin Choegyal is a master of Tibetan musical instruments such as the Dranyen (six-stringed long-necked lute), the Lingbu (transverse bamboo flute) and other ritual objects.
The Tashi Lhunpo monks perform their unique version of simultaneous intoning of three notes in harmony and play traditional Tibetan instruments such as the ten-foot long dung-chen horn, drums, bells, cymbals and gyaling trumpet.
The program also includes a performance of religious dance known as Cham. Traditionally performed in the monasteries, these dances are spectacles of mesmerising colour, motion and sound that serve as public performances as well as divine offerings.
The Compassionate Mandala Tour raises funds to support the exiled Tashi Lhunpo Monastery and the Tibetan Children’s Village in Dharamsala. This is an opportunity to experience the gift of beautiful music and world culture and to provide humanitarian assistance.

The Greencards

USA
With singer/bassist Carol Young and multiple string-instrument master Kym Warner from Australia, and violinist/violist Eamon McLoughlin from the UK, The Greencards are probably the least likely Austin-formed/Nashville-based band you’ve ever heard. The band’s love and respect for country, Americana, blues and bluegrass brought them together in 2003. Their urge to challenge themselves, to test the limits of any established genre, guided The Greencards on their first three albums.
The recently released fourth album Fascination on Sugar Hill records, is the band’s most daring accomplishment to date. Meticulously crafted arrangements serve as springboards for exhilarating improvisations. Acoustic textures and Carol Young’s moving vocals shimmer in the light of Jay Joyce’s innovative production.
A continued focus has accumulated awards and acclamations, from the Americana Music Award in 2006 for ‘Emerging Artist of the Year’, through tours with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson to a ‘Best Country Instrumental Performance’ Grammy nomination in 2008.

The Saw Doctors
IRELAND
Discovered in the back room of the Quays Pub in Galway in 1988 by Mike Scott of The Waterboys, The Saw Doctors’ singles ‘Hay Wrap’, ‘N17’ and ‘I Useta Lover’, which holds the record for the biggest selling Irish single, were number one in Ireland in the 90s. Their first album, If This is Rock & Roll, I Want My Old Job Back, was number one for most of 1991.
The Saw Doctors are powered by the songwriting partnership of Leo Moran and Davy Carton. Their songs range from the plight of Ireland's unmarried mothers to the effect of strong religion on a nation's youth; from playing gaelic football against a neighbouring village, to loving the prettiest girl in town but lacking the courage to tell her.
Over the years, The Saw Doctors have built up a reputation as a great live band. They have toured extensively in Europe, Australia, Canada and USA.

Truckstop Honeymoon

USA
Truckstop Honeymoon play break-neck breakdowns or heart-break waltzes. Like a Dodge with a burnt-out clutch, their music has two speeds and no reverse. Katie Euliss pounds a doghouse bass while Mike West punishes his banjo mercilessly.
Their music tells a story so honest and strange you know they didn’t make it up. Katie Euliss learned guitar, piano and bucket bass in the streets of New Orleans. Then she met Mike West, who lived by pickin’ banjo and selling CDs that he claimed were a curative for hangovers and small mindedness. After a courthouse wedding, the pair hit the road. They spent their wedding night in the Tiger Truck Stop. And so Truckstop Honeymoon was born …
Since Hurricane Katrina washed them out of New Orleans they have toured relentlessly, playing roadhouses and festivals from Norway to Tasmania. Great Big Family (2009) is their 5th CD on Louisiana label, Squirrel Records).

With his smokin' band & high-lonesome harmonies, Van is a singer songwriter of the old school, whose songs draw you into the heart of the matter, evoking a middle-ground between gritty modern morals and the mythical netherworld of the spirit. His albums are The Celestial Railroad (2008) and The Last Record Store (2009).

Vin Garbutt

UK
The biggest drawcard on the UK folk scene, a recipient of the BBC's 'Folk Entertainer Of The Year' Award, and to many the most entertaining folk act of them all. Vin is an intensely passionate singer of traditional, his own and other writer's songs, a master of the tin whistle, a fine guitarist, and the creator of the most bizarre and thoroughly daft patter between songs.
As a protest singer, Vin’s songwriting covers topics ranging from exploitation of foreign workers, oppression, abuse of agrochemicals, sexual exploitation, deforestation, cosmetic surgery, the genocide of Timorese people, foetal experimentation, industrial pollution, emigration, etc. etc. Needless to say there are many traditional as well as fun songs included.
2010 brings the release of a documentary movie about Vin, Teesside Troubadour, also released on DVD, and this Australian visit is the final leg in a his year-long international 'Forty Years Of Successful Anonymity' tour.

VulgarGrad
VulgarGrad bring you the old songs of the Russian thieves. Legend of stage and screen, Jacek Koman (Moulin Rouge, Romulus My Father) is the charismatic frontman who roars with the voice of a man betrayed. Backed by a gang of illustrious and musical ex-cons from The Ennio Morricone Experience; Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen, Zulya and the Children of the Underground; and Croque Monsieur. Their new album is King of Crooks. Theatrical, hilarious and dangerous; unmissable.
