Port Fairy Folk Festival 2018 Celebrating Excellence and Diversity
The 2018 festival reflects folk music of all cultures and gives a strong profile to the diversity of great music from our own country.
From the multi award winning Western Australian artist Gina Williams who writes and sings contemporary songs in Noongar language, to 2017 Aria winners All Our Exes Live in Texas, and super group Tex, Don & Charlie, who have perfected the Australian narrative in song.
Of course there are the legends of traditional folk, such as Ireland’s Andy Irvine, John McSherry & Donal O’Connor Trio, England’s Chris While & Julie Matthews, but the program is also steeped in new discoveries of the next generation of great folk music artists. Violons Barbares a stunning international collaboration of artists from Bulgaria, France and Mongolia, Jack Broadbent, who started his career in England as a busker and has taken to the stages of the Montreux Jazz Festival and beyond, Breabach who are redefining contemporary and traditional folk music from Scotland, and of course the list goes on.
Geoffrey Robertson QC will take to the stage and explore the role of the protest song with his signature brilliance. And of course there is the annual writers program which includes The Poet’s Brawl, The Aussie Morning Show and of course the much loved Pat Glover Story Telling Award.
Folk music is not one single genre, and folk culture is constantly evolving it is, after all, driven by people and communities throughout the world, who are ever changing. The one constant is it reflects the humanity and stories of the times.
